Aldert Smedes Papers, . 1790-1890

Episcopal clergyman in New York City and rector at St. Mary's School, Raleigh, N.C., 1842-1877. Chiefly sermons and Bible class lectures by Smedes and by his son Bennett (1837-1899), who succeeded him as rector at St. Mary's. Also included is correspondence; Aldert's travel diary in Spain, 1837; six sermons, 1828-1829, of Levi Silliman Ives, later bishop of North Carolina; and an autobiographical manuscript of Thomas Lyell (1775-1848), Aldert Smedes's father-in-law, Methodist circuit rider in Virginia and Episcopal clergyman in New York City.
